Molecule of the Month

Background information:  You will be given a molecule on the last Monday of every month.  There will be certain information that you must look up about this molecule.  This sheet will then be turned in the following Monday.

These sheets will count as a lab grade.  Remember that labs are worth 20% of your grade.  Each sheet is worth 10 points apiece.  At the end of the school year, you will turn in all 10 sheets.  Your scores for each month will be added together for up to 100 points.

LATE PAPERS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!

KEEP TRACK OF YOUR PAPERS BECAUSE DUPLICATES WILL NOT BE GIVEN!

Objectives:

1.      Become familiar with and learn to use chemical databases

2.      Learn to independently find information

You will be given a picture of a molecule and need to find specified information about it.  One helpful hint:  to determine the chemical formula of any of the listed compounds, simply count the number of each atom present.  For example, the following is the structure for benzoic acid:

By counting up the number of each atom, we get the following chemical formula:  C7H6O2.

To find other required information, the following websites may be useful:

www.chemfinder.com

www.google.com (Type the chemical formula into the search box.)

www.wikipedia.org (This website is very helpful if you know your molecules name or chemical formula.)
